thank you for posting the report, it gave me a contact to test mandan's water, they gave me a free report but it was from a soft water supply, so the sodium was 219, and bicarb, and total alk were high, i was sent a link, if anyone wishes to have thier water tested, ward labs has a test kit, below is the link.

WATER IN MINOT Empty

DK - it is a Ward labs report. The Minot water report is like Mandan's ...... not very detailed. I don't think the Minot report was even close to the Ward results. The 5.2 is mostly for the lighter hoppy beers, and only if the ph is close in my opinion. The darker malts seem to bring the ph into range on their own. I don't think the ph strips I use would be considered too accurate and I'm not a very scientific dude, but it works out.
I love the fact that there are millions of ways to brew and believe everyone must find their own style. My style and routine is a collection of things I've read about and patterned to suit me.
It all boils down to "Find your own style".

FUTHARK, you will find when it comes to brewing there are a million opinions. take all the input you want, but do what works for you. Rat makes great beer, as you said, so 5.2 works for him. there is some value to using it, but if you think just adding it will make all the difference you will be dissapointed. with out building your water from scratch you are just trying to get consistant water so your brews can be replicated. i will not say if it works or is a waste, but i do use it in some of my brews i have made identical batches with and with out it, i will not say i could detect (taste) a difinative difference (i think it helps bring out hop flavor just a bit), however the ph has been right on using it.

Rat, did you send in your water to ward labs to test the water? because i live in mandan and thier water report is not that detailed, do you have suggestions on how to get a report like this one?

I use it all the time. A little Campden, some 5.2, a dash of calcium chloride, and always run through an RV filter. Every now and then I'll mix in store bought water for lighter hoppy beers.
