Brainerd Lakes Beer
Never heard of them before, until the lil missus and myself went to Atomic Coffee in Moorhead yesterday. (Found out they had Surly Darkness on tap, so we just HAD to go...happy to report that all they hype is well represented in this beer)
Anyway, the coasters AC used were toting One Eyed Pike beer from Brainerd Lakes Beer Co. I'd never heard of it. After finishing our brews (I cried a bit when the glass was empty) we hopped next door to the liquor store to see if they had any in stock. They did. We bought a sixer of the First Pull IPA.
When we got home, we tried a couple. Not too darn bad! Very hoppy, but kind of a rough finish. Gets a bit bitter on the back end, but the florals and hoppiness out front are awesome! Then, I discovered something very interesting: the beers are bottled by Lake Superior Brewing Co. in Duluth! If anyone has gotten a chance to tour this place, you'll know how shocking that was. They are basically a two-man brewery that hires part-time help for cleaning and bottling. From what I understand, they have a tough time just keeping up with the demand for their own beer, so I can't believe they took on making, bottling and distributing two types of beers from Brainerd.
Anyway, if you get the chance to try this stuff, do it! I haven't gotten a chance to sample the One Eyed Pike (a Belgian-wheat beer) but that's on my list.
NOTE: Did a search on www.mnbeer.com and found this article from TWO YEARS AGO! Guess I'm really out of the loop.... Brainerd Lakes Brewery
