Second batch in the dehydrator
The second batch of the season is in the dehydrator and will be toasted (kilned) later today... sure makes the house smell good

Wow! That's really neat. Thanks for posting the photos. It makes a lot of sense now.

Malt works
The malt was ready to be dried, so I loaded it into the food dehydrator and have it running at 95F. The malt should be dry by morning. I put some photos in the gallery under "Gardening & Ingredients".

Where are the pictures!!
That is cool Jon. I may have to come over and check out the current production. I got an Excalibur for my b-day so some malting may be in my future as well!

Wow...you're sure taking "Home" brewing to another level. I've never heard of anyone malting their own grain. That's pretty darn cool!

Malt Works up and running again
Just starting malting some nice Conlon two-row barley courtesy of Jerry Ford
My malt-works consists of a pail, two big roasting pans, some plastic garbage bags, a food dehydrator, a sieve and a gas oven. I can do 4 pounds at a time, as that is all that will fit in the food dehydrator. The process isn't very difficult or complicated, you just have to baby-sit it for a few minutes twice a day for 4-5 days. Home made malt is every bit as good in both flavor and extract efficiency as the commercial stuff.
